Andy2188
Hi I'm new on the forum and was wondering if anyone would, is this a good idea or bad? The general concept would be a gym with lots of community rooms where people could meet others having gone through similar stuff and hangout as well as the gym proper where all staff would also hold a mental health qualification. Alittlelost
Welcome to the forum Andy. I haven't personally been to a gym specifically for individuals with mental health issues, however, I have a friend who did. She was under a mental health service that takes their clients to the centre in which there is a gym as well as other activities for an hour or so. She never had a bad word to say about it to me and didn't seem to have any issues concerning it being mental health specific.

Data
Years ago I was a psychiatric hospital in-patient and they had a gym there, it was good. Are you looking to set up a gym, like this Andy? It sounds like a good idea but I wonder how you would fund it? It sounds specialist and expensive to start up and run. Kara.
Different and maybe contradictory thoughts i have. 1) Stigma. Why separate people with mental health from people without mental health problems? Though this is certainly not the aim, would people feel discriminated? 2) Maybe it would be helpful in different stages of recovery. 3) Could other people also attend? 4) Would that be in a community, in a hospital, in a MH unit? If in community I tend to think 'no' because of stigma and the effort that everyone should be doing to work on integration and not the other way around. But if people felt safer then yes. Would I feel safer? Indifferent.
walker
understanding of mh would be nice but no doubt there would still be fitness fanatics - maybe even more obsessive than normal so that would feel just rubbish
