•Trusting the authenticity of the person’s experiences.

•Expressing genuine concern for the person’s well being.

Strategies for Mobilizing Internal Resources for Recovery:

•Helping the person to set and reach concrete goals.

•Helping the person to develop better coping skills.

•Helping the person to recall previous achievements and positive experiences.

•Using techniques for changing the person’s negative perceptions of events and self.

•Helping the person to accept limitations.

•Helping the person grieve for the losses experienced because of the mental illness.

•Being available when the person is in a crisis.

•Supporting the person’s involvement in educational programs.

•Helping the person join self-help groups.

•Educating consumers and friends/family members regarding the illness.

•Showing interest in the person’s housing situation.
