Anxiety/ Panic Attacks

I'm really struggling at the moment with severe anxiety, I am having problems with my stomach due to being anxious all the time and I'm actually quite concerned about my health because of it. I know that people get stomach ulcers from having bad anxiety and I would really like to prevent this!

My stomach is literally churning from the second I wake up in the morning, I have butterflies all the time and there's not a second that goes by where I cant feel it.

I have tried all the usual things, deep breathing, relaxation etc but nothing seems to work.

On a night time when I go to bed I keep getting a really tight chest and fast pulse like its the start of a panic attack- it doesn't always turn into a full panic attack but sometimes it does. I've no idea whats causing it.

I can't go back to my GP, they already think I'm a hypochondriac. Please don't suggest that I go these, I just cant.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions??

I totally understand but I will suggest going to your GP to ask for a referral to a mental health specialist who can diagnose you accordingly. Think of your GP as a stopping post on the road to where you want to be. They are not qualified to assess you and if you ask for a referral to your local community mental health team you can see a psychiatrist who can look into things for you xxx

Really sympathise.....panic attacks can be truly terrifying xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I attended a MH group and was taight relaxation exercises. It took a loooooooooooong time, but eventually I overcame the anxiety. I still get it sometimes, but at least I have some idea of how to control them.

I found this lot to be a great help:

http://www.nopanic.org.uk/page10.html

and also this book was a lifesaver - even though it appears a bit dated, it was ace:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Self-Help-Your-Nerves-overcoming/dp/0722531559/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1329944242&sr=1-1

Hope you get some relief soon xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Is there any way you could see a different GP? I have seen lots of different GPs (if i don't like a GP i wont see them again and the good ones often leave/go on maternity leave) and they have all had slightly different views. My favourite doctor for the last few years was Dr P (when she wasnt on maternity leave) and she was great with depression but felt there was nothing anyone could do about my physical problems. then i saw Dr O who started refering me to every department in the hospital, she was supposed to refer me to 1 department because of when i went to a&e but she was looking into all sorts of possibilities so she obviously thought something could be done to help me but she kind of backed off a bit as soon as i mentioned depression, she didnt really want to acnowledge that side of things. I really liked both doctors but they obviously didnt work together or share opinions, they just did there own thing. so if 1 doctor thinks your a hypocondriac it doesnt mean they all will.

also even if your GP isnt part of a surgery or if you are supposed to see the same person every time i'm sure someone on this site said you are always entitled to a 2nd opinion.

for my stomach i have mints and gaviscon tablets which you dont need a prescription for. I have also had ranitidine which you can get over the counter, it didnt solve my problems completely but it made a difference so it might be worth trying if youd rather not go to your Gp again

this isnt really a good thing to recomend but the way i finally got the doctors to start paying attention was when i went to a first aider at a football match and they were so worried by my pulse they sent me to hospital and that was when the doctors stopped dismissing everything as anxiety. But if you do find your out somewhere and you feel really anxious and ill you could maybe go to a first aider and get a more neutral viewpoint. even if they dont send you to hospital they will have to do a medical report so maybe you could get a copy?

The fast pulse was always seen as a panic attack for me but the more i had them the more i realised that it wasnt the panic giving me a fast pulse and tight chest, it was the physical things that was causing the panic attack. like i said it was a while before the doctors paid any attention but as soon as they found out things werent right with my heart they agreed with me it wasnt a panic attack.

I get anxiety/panic attacks frequently although mine are made worse by stress and aggrivation in my life, I often get panic attacks at work, and i very frequently get them if i dare to go outside,

Mine tend to subside when I am in a place that i am comfortable in and feel safe, at work this means i hide in my office, at home i go and hide in my bedroom or if its really bad actually under the sheets in my bed,

I don't like taking meds and I've never found the gp able to help me in this regard at all, I find it helpful to put calming music on on my ipod, and i try to meditate, get to a point where i convince myself i'm the only thing that exists around me and then I don't feel the symptoms as bad because my body relaxes and vents all that pent up tension and stress,

It used to work brilliantly for me, nowadays it doesn't work so well but I feel i am even more stressed, sometimes it gets so bad I just have to shut down and stop doing anything altogther and it can be quite debilitating,

I hope you find a way to eleviate some of the tension and stress that your going through atm.
