Thanks for all the replies foplks - interesting and varying experiences! I was honestly expecting people to all say they've all been treated like shit - it is good to know there are some nice health care professionals out there!

Just reading through, I had memories going through. Basically, 'minor' overdose = me being treated like shit; when I did more extreme stuff they were nice to me  I guess that encouraged me to be more and more extreme  can't bloody win so I just stopped! !

The disappointment on the Senior Nurse and the Doctors faces when my liver results returned as 'within normal range' following a paracetamol overdose was palpable. The cherry on the cake was when they couldnt help me with my withdrawal symptoms, but they could give me some paracetamol!! I think its fair to say A&E staff are cold hearted and burnt out and should not be in the caring profession if all they care about are car crash victims or kids with meningitis.

When I was on the children's ward after an OD (I was about 14 at the time), I was looked at with disgust, people would not listen to anything I had to say, I was given paracetamol for a headache without any words, they were just put on the table in front of me. I wasn't allowed to go to the playroom to toys/books or game consoles, it was horrible. The one nurse that really got to me was called Bobbi, that's how much she got to me that I can still remember her name nearly a decade after it! She was the first one to see me and was instructed to take my bp/temp and just basically monitor me. She was horrible, she was fairly old, and treated me like I was a time waster and a pull on NHS resources. She said to me at some point through the grogginess during the night that I was preventing sick babies from having a bed because I was wasting their space. I can remember the feeling of just wanting to run, to et away from the one

Lace that was supposed to be helping me.

I hope that stigma and wrongdoing by people with MI can be irradiated for the safety and sake of people who need to use this service, and I hope that nurses etc can be educated about suicidal attempts and not be so harsh and dismissive.

I've been quite a few times to A and E for overdoses and self harm and most of the doctors and nurses were lovely and very understanding.

Of course there will always be the few who refuse to speak to you or shake their heads in disgust but they are the minority I've found.

I agree they have been fine with me

At first I was going to click yes, but then stopped to think, were they treating me the way they were because of SH or because I was behaving like a cornered animal, lol. I think it would be fair to stay the later.

My personal experiences haven't been very good to be honest they speak down to me and act like I'm "wasting their time" and I'm not a valued "patient" but worst case was I was waiting in seperate room as I was all over the place and hallucinating and someone shouted in reception area..nurse to another oh she's here for attempted suicide attempt - paracetamol waiting for blood results :(:(

I havent been to hospital for a self harm and overdose but i have had mixed experiences with a&e, one woman thought i was time wasting and told me to go home, i went back the next day and they said i was showing stroke symptoms, i got refered to a specialist who said i hadnt had a stroke but he did find 2 things wrong with me. so they do get it wrong and even tho obviously there is a big stigma with mental health that there isnt with physical problems they do make really big mistakes

I've had mixed experiences over the years, but have met some very hard faced nurses during that time, to the point of rude and disapproving. I have also at the same time seen how stretched they were, and can appreciate their stress levels, without justifying anyone's bad experiences! There certainly does need to be better and more current education to all A & E staff, to ensure personal attitudes don't stray into their professions.
