Help - Trying To Find A Therapist That Does Dbt

I really want to try DBT.

I would give anything for there to be an NHS practitioner available but there isn't, not around here, I've asked.
The waiting list for CBT here is 2 years.

I cannot really afford to see someone privately but I am so desperate to help myself that if I can find someone (privately) then I will sacrifice other stuff to find a way to pay for it.

Can anyone recommend a good therapist for DBT in the North of England, or suggest a source or database where I could find one?

I'm hoping that someone on here can help?

2 years for CBT? Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry about that. I thought that such length of waiting was for psychodynamic psychotherapy...

I usually google everything and usually get an answer. I found this 'mind' in one second: http://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/drugs-and-treatments/dialectical-behaviour-therapy/useful-contacts/#.Unwwmfnwk9A

Do some research and i hope that you find someone suitable. Perhaps someone who's doing DBT can help you more. I'm doing schema therapy privately. I see it as an investment... What to say?

Good luck. :-)

Thank you for replying Karaindrou - can I ask, what is Schema Therapy - and have you found it useful/beneficial?
I am willing to try anything.

Yes, two years. Even my GP was appalled and readilly admitted that the provision around here (and the dept that provides it as the local hospital) was terrible.
That makes me cross - what about all those people (not just me) desperate for help and there is nothing there? It is wrong.

However I am used to having to fight my way through the NHS to get heard or taken seriously.
So have decided I will damn well do it myself.

I have already checked out the Mind link, thank you - I found it yesterday, and called them .. they were as helpful as they could be given that they didn't know of anyone offering DBT but have referred me to their assessment service - I havea telephone interview next week, and I am really hoping that they can offer me something that will help. I am willing to try anything and everything. I readily admit to being desperate to access help.

I havea lso made an appointment with a counsellor that I have seen before ... she is very good but doesn't do DBT ... I am wondering if she may know of anyone ... I will ask her too. And keep searching/putting out feelers.

I am just having to have faith in the old adage 'When the student is ready, the teacher will appear'.

If I have any success finding anyone who offers DBT I will post any relevant info (without breaching anyone's confidentiality) that I find in case it helps other people that are also searching.

Thanks again Karaindrou, take care and hope you have a good day today x

hello, i live in the north east of england and i had the exact same problem although i already did cbt but that was 3 years ago and i was seen really quick so that sucks... but for dbt i was also desperate to do it but no where round here did it... i found this place in york, you can go once a week for a full day or you can stay residentially for a year, its very expensive though so you would need to ask your gp to apply for funding from the nhs... mine did for me but it was denied because my circumstances weren't significant enough. anyway i got a place for reflective borderline therapy group (which i didn't really want but was desperate for help so thats what I'm doing) i start in january and thats at a place that is a specialist in the region and i asked about dbt there and she said that a few of her colleagues where looking for refferalls ( i guess dbt is on its way up) but she said she wanted to try group first so i'll do that then start looking into it again. also when i said i already did cbt, that was 3 years ago but i went to see her for a second time at the beginning of the year when i was applying for funding, she wrote a letter of refferall which i think you'll also need. but she worked for primary care and she said her boss (the manager) was putting together a dbt group and was going to put me forward for it when it started so i think that although the north doesn't offer it now, i think in time it will

your options--

apply for funding for the york DBT

write a letter maybe explaining your circumstances to your primary care psychology department enquiring about DBT

or if you live near newcastle look up "claremont house nhs"

http://www.ntw.nhs.uk/sd.php?l=2&d=9&sm=15&id=236

also heres the link for the place in york... they do a few things but your looking for the acorn programme. i printed it out or asked them to send me some leaflets and gave them to my gp, she then sent that with my letter from my therapist to the application place.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Safyia i think that any 'battle' that mean to improve the mental health services in the UK is a good 'battle'. Here is an article that i just read about the cuts in mental health:

http://www.communitycare.co.uk/2013/11/07/we-are-no-longer-prepared-to-remain-silent-frontline-staff-blow-whistle-on-impact-of-mental-health-cuts/#.UnyyJfm-3To?cmpid=NLC

Schema Therapy is a relatively new therapy created by Jeffrey Young to treat BPD, NPD, Depression and there are now some studies being done with forensic patients. Here is a link that has quite a lot of information that may help you learn more about it and yourself:

http://www.communitycare.co.uk/2013/11/07/we-are-no-longer-prepared-to-remain-silent-frontline-staff-blow-whistle-on-impact-of-mental-health-cuts/#.UnyyJfm-3To?cmpid=NLC

It's not on the NHS yet and has it is a longer treatment it may never get there. Though it has good treatment outcomes, so they say. My experience is mixed, but i think that my BPD makes it very difficult for my T to get to me. I've got a strong 'detached protector' that stops him from doing his job. When i manage to move that protective part away, i find it very helpful. I had experiences that i had never had in my life with the imagery work. I find it very powerful as well as the concept of 'limited reparenting'.

Good luck with your search. Keep updated.

Hugs.
