I assume it is about having to let someone go because you feel that you are not good enough for them and put them on a pedestal like a "diamond". I think years ago I did this myself and felt that the girl I was dating was too good for me - too beautiful, too smart, too popular etc. while at the same time I put myself down as not being good enough for her (or anyone).
