Scared To See Gp For Referral.

Hi, not really sure what to do. My counselling sessions are due to finish in the Next 2 weeks and I'm petrified of going alone. My therapist is a specialist in dissotiation. She has been treating me for the past twelve weeks, but unfortunately the therapy is only short term as its free and funded by charities. I think I might have bpd and believe I still need a lot of counselling. I'm so frightened about seeing my gp and telling him how bad things are in case he thinks my children are in danger and involves other services. They aren't there needs are being met and they are doing fantastic. However I am not. My partner doesn't know how bad things are, I guess you get good at hiding things growing up and can continue to do so as an adult. I desperately need some help but I'm so scared. My dad was in and out of hospitals and often sectioned under the mental health act. I don't want my children to have to go thru any of that, I don't want those close to me to know how bad things are. My point is what will happen if I ask for a referral to see a pshychatrist, my counsellor recommend I see one. I'm scared to see the gp in case he try to put me in hospital or involves child services. I don't want people to know how bad things are? Has anyone been to gp and what are you experiences once going. Please help?

Hi Zoe, firstly welcome to the forums! I hope being able to post on here will help you a little.

Secondly, don't panic - I think your fears are understandable but just that - fears. I have been in the mental health system for a long time and I have never come across anyone who has been sectioned and / or whisked into hospital on an initial visit to the GP. Aside from anything else, there are hardly any psychiatric beds in the uk nowadays so they can't just stick anyone in! Also, asking for a referral to a psychiatrist alone can not possibly lead to you being hospitalised, otherwise, a significant percentage of the population would be in hospital! I think you can relax on that front. Similarly, the GP will have no cause to contact any other services if your kids aren't being affected - as you say, you being ill doesn't necessarily mean they are being neglected or anything and as you say they are doing well, he should have no reason to believe otherwise.

I'm sorry that you are feeling so bad at the moment and I totally understand the not wanting to admit to anyone how bad things are. I was exactly the same when I went to my GP all those years ago and when I got put on anti-depressants I didn't tell anyone for ages. Likewise, I only told people on a need to know basis when things went further and I had therapy and more complex treatment etc. I'm currently working and no-one at my workplace has any idea of my mental health issues, past or present. I think it is hard to trust people initially but there should be no pressure to tell anyone if you don't feel comfortable doing so. Having said that, if there are people who you trust and think you could support you in some way, your issues are nothing to be ashamed of at all so don't worry about that either.

I know it can be terribly hard to ask for help and take that first step but you can do it and it sounds like you need to kick things off in order to get the support you need. Good luck with it and let us know how you get on if you'd like to.

Drs will not section you that easily nowadays they will try to work with you and find the best possible outcome.

Unless your children are in immediate danger they will not take them away.

Talk to your gp and explain your probs

Pls do not be afraid of help

Go and talk to your Dr asap

They are there for you.

Work with them.

Good luck

Sandy

Hey Zoe,

i agree with the above posts that the emphasis is very very likely to be about finding you support and incredibly unlikely that anyone is going to break up your family.

it builds up the pressure if you can't be honest about how you are struggling, and so it is in all your best interests to make a start in loosening the lid a little bit, i think there are many people on thse boards with children who have a lot of difficulties and m/h problems and still are able to take great care of their kids and also get the support they need,

good luck, hope you can open up a bit and get some help

lali xx
