Gay male Uk, newly diagnosed BPD. Any advice please?

HI. I'm 43 and gay. Had ups and downs since i was 16/17. Work in healthcare. Couldn't get into medical school and have always felt a failure over this. Do temp/locum work as not able to hold down a full time job due to mood swings and depression. Not had a BF for 15 years. Read a book called " Why am I still depressed?" about soft bipolar and the bipolar spectrum. One Dr thought I had BP type 2 due to my mood swings and rage issues and years of depression and use of SSRIs. Saw a psychiatrist last summer who said I had traits of BPD. Given a session with a psychologist but discharged and now on no meds and not seeing anyone. Just don't think they were interested as I was't a suicide risk (only tried once age 20) and I don't self-harm or cut. They said no drugs recommended in UK to treat BPD. So I'm kinda lost! I have no plans and I just plod day to day. I manage to work 3 to 4 days a week, but I hardly ever go out to socialise. I just tend to stay in my room and read or watch old TV on Youtube. Does anyone relate to this, gay or straight? Any gay men out there would be great! Can anyone offer any advice on how to improve the future? Any good books to read to offer help, and motivation to do things? Thanks for reading.

Hello Sir.

I'm 31, straight, and can relate to this.  I'm newly diagnosed with BPD.  I have had several tumultuous relationships over the years.  I'm very socially isolated after losing my job in the IT industry.  Lost my job after alcohol problem led to relationship breakdown which led to losing house, money, car etc.  Sadly, I've sat in a waiting list for treatment for BPD but have been given one 20 minute appointment with a psychiatrist who gave me some anti-psychotics on top the SSRI tablets I've been taking for years.  If they say you've got BPD traits, can't you speak to your GP and insist a referral to a Personality Disorder clinic in your area?  That way you might be able to get assessed and get a firm diagnosis rather than just being told you have "traits".

I'm looking for good self-help reading material too.
